Summer Blues

Attendance has been at record lows all summer; but, we are still meeting (you know, perseverence and all that). As summer wanes, we hope to see the numbers rise again. And we hope to see you there.

Good internet chess sites

For correspondence chess (which is FAR more exciting than it may sound!) there is no better site than SchemingMind.com. The folks there are top drawer. It is rare to see such civilized, courteous folk on the internet. I guess all the nice folk are there. SchemingMind is correctly self-described as a small, friendly internet community.

For live chess, give a look at FreeChess.org also known as FICS (Free Internet Chess Server). On the up side, it is FREE. On the down side, the last I was on, the chatting was rough edged from time to time. It is possible to block the chats, though. You'll need to download an interface; many good ones are available for free. There are even a few premium (pay to get) interfaces for mobile devices.

There are premium (you gotta pay to play) live chess sites, too; but I am not familiar enough with the choices to recommend any.

Simultaneous Exhibition

We are gearing up to do a simul. We have an active tournament player from the Cyclone Chess Club in Ames that will come over to play up to 12 different games at the same time. We are looking at having it on a Saturday sometime mid-May. We want your input. Please post a comment here on the blog.

Also, we are getting some tournament quality boards and pieces. They will cost about 11 dollars. If you would like one, please post on the blog or come to the club and talk to me.

We meet at the Leonard Good Community Center from 6 to 8 or so on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Thursdays of each month. Click here for directions.

New Year's Update

We have had a couple of meetings since the last post.

We have grown a bit since then, too. One new attendee loves variants as well as regular chess. What's a variant? Elephant Chess, Turn-around Chess or Crazyhouse (with a specially designed piece set), 3-D Chess. If you think you might them, come try them out.

Oh, yeah and there was an article in the paper. If you haven't seen it, check out this link. Our thanks to Mr Jeff Miller and the Boone News Republican.

There's a lot of youngsters, so don't be afraid if you aren't very good, yet. There's a couple who can push a pawn pretty well, too, if you're looking for tougher competition.

We are considering both some instruction for beginning level players and a simul at some point. What do you think? Please post comments here. We would love to hear from you.

We just had our first club meeting tonight. A few grown-ups and several kids came. I think the folks who came had a good time.

If you have been wavering between going and not going, please let me persuade you to come. You don't have to be a chess expert, at all.

Haven't played in years? Come on down.
Are your children looking for some other children to play against? Bring them down.
Looking for some high-level chess action? Come over and I will try to give you an enjoyable game. :-)

Welcome to the Ogden Chess Club website. We have moved from our old website to here.

Our inaugural club meeting will be Thursday 27 October 2005 at 6:00 PM at the Leonard Good Community Center. We will meet on the ground floor.

We will meet every 2nd, 4th, and 5th Thursday of each month. (The other Thursdays, I will be in Ames at the Cyclone Chess Club.)

All are welcome to come--from kids to high-rated players. No dues--just come.

If you have a board and a clock, go ahead bring them.
